A problem in itself for a tutor when he finds students who
have a habit of being lazy to count. Problems related to counting seem to be a
burden on the heads of students. Even though this habit will be fatal. Of
course, the higher the level of education taken, the impact that will be felt
from being lazy to calculate will be heavier.
Therefore a teacher must be clever at providing solutions as
quickly as possible so that it does not have more serious consequences.
Before we provide solutions and enlightenment, first a tutor
must know the reasons why a student is lazy to count, even though counting is
something fun, even in a student's daily life it cannot be separated from this
problem.
For example the introduction of more or less. How could the
student know exactly which one was more than the objects presented in front of
him without the student knowing how many of these objects.
As for the reasons - because students are lazy to count,
first, students do not memorize multiplication. This is the main reason that
makes students lazy to count.
The students should have mastered multiplication by heart
since grade 3 of elementary school, even though it has not been included in the
learning material. However, in the field there were only sixth grade students,
new students memorized the multiplication. Even then, with the help of fingers.
Even worse, at the junior high or high school level, students
still have not memorized the multiplication.
Second, it is unable to operate negative integers. Please
note that negative integer operations will always be used up to the SMA level.
Third, make it a habit of calculating using either a mobile device or a
calculator.
The third reason is actually the implication of lazy
calculating. However, there are also many students who are able to count well,
still using tools. Even if this is allowed, students will be lazy and get
lazier.
This does not mean that you are not allowed to use assistive
devices, this is permissible, it's just that a tutor must be observant when his
students are allowed to use assistive devices when not.
Isn't it true that in every test, calculating aids are not
allowed. Fourth, instant culture. How many students are lazy to count when they
see numbers that are too large or the steps are too long, even though each step
is practicing analyzing something.
If a tutor already understands these causes, then the things
that must be done by a tutor are first, teach arithmetic operations as early as
possible. Even sooner, earlier, the better.
Second, teachers must often verbally test simple arithmetic
operations.
This can be taken if there are still students who are
constrained in counting. Even oral exams should be done frequently, either as a
lesson opening or closing.
Third, motivate students. The tutor must be able to explain
the negative effects of lazy calculating, so that students will have fear if
they are lazy to count.
